As for the flower gimmick, there are quite a few nectavores among honeycreepers. There primary food was the nectar from ohia lehua trees, but there were also lobelia plants that evolved along side them. These plants became specialized to be pollinated by honeycreepers. As such, they grew to have flowers specifically tailored to the bills of specific honey creepers. Some were even tapered at the ends so that the honeycreepers could look for avian predators while feeding. The more attractive the flower to the birds, the more likely it is to get pollinated. Lobeliads also had their own diversification event with 152 known species. A lot of them became endangered/ extinct as they had specific pollinators who did the same. This is likely the origin for the specific nectar by island and how it changes the form of oricorio.
