The battles in DP weren't as well animated but were more reasonably strategic. It had a better ratio of opponents that fought both harder and smarter. But with XY, most battles felt like both sides were haphazardly winging it. Plus, unlike Brock, Cilan, or Iris, there was no one there to add tension by giving skeptic commentary. Serena, Bonnie, Sawyer just kept cheering Ash on no matter what he did. And Ash's pokemon that weren't Pikachu or Greninja received criminally low screentime about halfway through Kalos.
And on a personal note regarding the animation, I really disliked how the XY animators felt that everybody and every pokemon needed to spin and gyrate every time they moved.
