Press L to pull out the Camera, you can use either the 3DS or joystick to look around, and R to take a picture. The Pokemon act and react like living animals, if you were to throw too many apples at a Rhyhorn, it might attack back, if you act in an appropriate way towards a Pokemon, you may get a closer look, making it go in different poses or follow commands.

Like animal crossing, your own map(s) wont have all Pokemon, they will be chosen at random, to collect all, you have to travel to other maps and look for them.
