It really does read like the writers were going to have Kieran become possessed by Pecharunt (explaining his pecha-shaped ponytail) but someone up top said no and told them to just have him go through a rollercoaster of emotions and then make Pecharunt a harmless zombie maker. It's pretty sad. They care more about protecting their brand than actually using pokemon and their influence on humans for interesting storytelling.
