Gen 4 rejected the visual and conceptual simplicity of gen 1 and 2 and embraced designs with as many colors and patterns as possible, replacing the typical kaiju-like shapes of the first gens and embracing bulky humanoid forms. Gen 5 followed that route, then they changed it in gen 6.
Put any gen 5 Pokemon in a list of gen 4 Pokemon and it will blend in seamlessly. Add any gen 2 or 7 Pokemon in the list and they'll stick out like a sore thumb.
