So I just played this game a week ago. Got it as a gift. Honest thoughts: it's not a "bad" game, it's functional. But it's really, REALLY, painfully mediocre.
As a start if you're looking for adventure, you're not going to find it here. You're on rails for the vast majority of the game. Some of it gets truly ridiculous. For example you register for the gym challenge and you're told to rest at a hotel until tomorrow. Then you exit the building and you're stopped by an npc that tells you the hotel is to your left. Then the game drags you to the same npc just a couple steps to the right. Before bringing you inside to another npc that tells you to rest. And the whole game is like this. Any attempt to progress past the point you're supposed to be in will be stopped by Team Yell going full retard and refusing to let you pass.
The gym themselves, aesthetically, are pretty hype. Really I love the stadium and the crowd in this game. But the experience is sullied because they're pushovers. All of them. I recommend not using Dynamax because it ruins the little challenge you have.
The Wild Area is the closest you get to "adventure" and honestly it's not that great. It's just an open area where you can freely travel and catch pokemon. But it's the best part of the game because its the only time the game isn't holding your hand until your fingers turn blue.
There's no real post game. You chase around a couple idiots. Do some Dynamax battles, catch a wolf. Other than that it's the Battle Tower forever.
All in all it's pretty meh. 6/10. I haven't done any of the DLC content, this is just the main game.
