The male exist to keep the genome healthy and viable. Females that can asexually procreate do so at the risk of lowering the genetic diversity of their genome because they are effectively making clones. So in truth the male is more long-term supplemental rather than a immedate short-term necessity.
If Gamefreak wanted to be accurate here several of these pokemon (specifically the females) would be able to either lay eggs by themselves or mate with another female. The offspring in turn would be female and have the same exact stat distribution, move and maybe even nature (e.g. clone). While breeding with a male and female would give you offspring that varied stat distribution, different moves from both parents and a different nature.
However I suspect this kind of mechanic would be a bit too thematically heavy in a kids game with parents looking over the shoulder. Even though this situation would be reflecting real life survival strategies by animals.
