Great games in Emerald, Platinum, and HG/SS Great Spinoffs like Pinball R/S, Mystery Dungeon R/B Time/Darkness & Sky, the Shadow Pokemon games, and the Ranger games. Probably some of the higher/est points of the meta too as well as both gens bringing some of the biggest game changers in mechanics and the way Pokemon is played (Double Battles, Abilities, Phys/Spec split).
Gen 1/2 Pokemania is a genuine rose-tinted time of spergy kids fighting over Pokemon cards in the school playground, usually getting them banned, and the only people who think this was the best period almost positively went through the teen phase of "growing up" and stopped playing Pokemon at Gen 3, and their opinion can safely be disregarded.
