Dropping the irony here and being honest. It’s because despite my misgiving about the games (I’ve been playing since I was around 4-5 and played each game as they released all the way back to Red/Blue/Yellow and have no excuses for Game Freak being shit) I understand as a fan that the Pokémon themselves are what draws me to the series. The games, and their features, do not attract me in any way outside of competitive battling with the Pokémon I’ve raised. The games may be shit at a lot of what they try to do, but a well designed Pokémon (or many) are always worth playing the games for and adding them to your collection for the future like they’re living animals makes me still happy even in my 20’s. Ultra Sun has it’s flaws and I’m not denying it, but I played it for the few Pokémon I liked like Totem Mimikyu and Solgaleo, and love that I can keep them basically forever with forward compatibility. I was around during the RSE fiasco where all Pokémon in GSC were stuck forever on dying cartridges so maybe I’m just looking at it from that angle, but I really don’t feel at all connected to the stories because I’m not the target audience. I just care about catching and raising some competitive Pokémon to stomp my friends with/take into Battle Spot.
