The atmosphere. Especially the original. I honestly think Orre did "boonie dystopian america" damn near perfect. I suppose that's why people sometimes say Unova doesn't feel "american" in comparison. But aside from that, it does have some edginess to it which isn't cringe but actually endearing. The music is also extremely good, fits the setting they were aiming for.

Perhaps some Smeargle "graffiti art" in some places and on some buildings & trains wouldn't have hurt give the world some character. Game Freak could make things look more "real" without changing the core audience.

I also suggest to the OP to play Pokemon Colosseum. That game is grimy as fuck.
