HMs as they are implemented in the games
>unforgettable roughly 10 moves that only specific pokemon can learn that you must have both gimped the moveset of and have in your party in order to progress on the map in the locations requiring HMs
HMs improved in a way that would make the games much better:
>no more specific moves for HMs, instead, give each type an overworld effect
>e.g. water creates water on the overworld, ice freezes water on the overworld, fire sets something on fire, grass can grow plants, psychic can move specific objects
>now, instead of needing a pokemon with [STRENGTH], you can have any pokemon that knows a [PSYCHIC] type move, or whatever, which allows you to perform certain actions in the overworld
>tying into this system, redesign the entire HM implementation in overworld to be actual logical puzzles to solve that present gameplay instead of "need cut for progress gate". E.G. Golden Sun games had great examples of this overworld puzzles
