A female fictional character nerds consider their wife (and devote themselves to as they would a wife). A misconception is that characters themselves are "waifus" and this gives rise to the term "waifubait" for characters who are incredibly appealing to audiences.
I think people are bereft of a term to refer to the selling of characters that has honestly been going on for a long time. Either that or they're just ignorant or lazy. (It seems "moe"/"moeshit", though call them "moe characters" is ironically more accurate than calling them "waifus". Not so much Pokemon themselves though, that's something different.)
