Gen 7 is a step in the right direction as much as it's a step in the wrong direction.
I liked it more than Gen 6 because at least it tried a few new things, but some of them didn't go so well.
The good:
>intended difficulty is higher than Gen 6, even though that's not saying much and it should be higher than this
>the game looks nice and the new engine looks great in HD
>totems are a fantastic concept with a decent execution, but they need to be more/harder and they should be an addition to the existing formula instead of replacing gyms
>it has a memorable cast, both design and personality wise
>by themselves, a lot of new pokemon are iconic and memorable
>SOS battles are neat, USUM does them well
>Poke pelago
>(USUM) Story antagonist is an actual Pokemon instead of someone trying to control them. This is different and unique.
The bad:
>the world and level design is almost entirely linear. There are some smart connections in the world here and there but it's overall the most linear Pokemon has been so far. This has been a big problem since Gen 5, where the story took priority over exploration, and it's worse than ever here
>way too many Pokemon are special or legendaries, leading to a small variety of new obtainable Pokemon during your adventure. This isn't a problem considering the amount of older Pokemon you can get, but I would still prefer a bigger selection of creatures in the early game
>the unskippable text dialogue during the first 2 hours almost kills replayability. If it wasn't for the unique elements of the games like totems, I would have absolutely avoided picking up the game again after my first playthrough because of this alone
>festival plaza is a waste of the developer's and players' time
>removal of good past features like the Dexnav and worse use of the bottom screen
>(USUM) story changes happened without any consideration of how the overall story should have been modified to compensate, leading to new plotholes and unanswered questions
