The main games stopped being "this exact same one thing that progressively gets updated", that's why they decided to cut the dex and give us gimmicky shit like megas, g-max, regionals etc., it's all one off, self contained gimmicky experience from now on
That's why they won't just give idk Delibird a regular evolution or update its stats/ability, their goal is not to update their format and keep building on top of it anymore but make something quick that may seem fresh and new from the player like Obstagoon or G-max/Mega <Pokemon> and then rapidly move on to something else with the same basic concept
