I prefer the idea that your child hood friend who had their pokemon stolen by Ricardo, gets the third starter and fights their way up to champion out of shear determination to never be taken advantage of by stronger trainers ever again. When you defeat them they realize that strong friendships are equally as important as strong pokemon.
