Sand has generally been used to disrupt other weather archetypes or just add some passive damage that would help wallbreakers and sweepers, but Sand Rush/Excadrill has changed that I suppose since it became the first good sand abuser. As far as I'm concerned, the image is only lacking Gigalith since it has Sand Stream now, but I don't know how old this image is.
That, and having a godamn pseudo legendary as weather setter is a large reason why sand is a successful archetype since both it and Hippowdon can serve more purposes besides setting sand.
