Another tip you'll likely find handy is, when trying it in areas where the pokemon move (water/caves/desert) you can close the distance once you get really close by running with B. They'll try running away, but because you're already so close you'll get to them a little faster, making it easier to encounter them. It can help you close the gap before they move to a different spot, although you won't be hitting a 99 streak with Cavenav.
