Makes you think about stuff in battle, such as what pokémon is immune or changes the effect of what you're doing to it, or when to best deploy your own pokémon. It also adds that extra bit of flavor to the game, Slowpoke being Oblivious, which fits it's "character" perfectly, Groudon having Drought (which meant, at least in RS, that he could fire off Solar Beams every turn without recharging), or Pikachu having static, meaning striking it's body directly is always a risk.
