Danganronpa's main games are about killing games. Students in the killing games are trapped and have "Ultimate Talents" meaning they are so good at something that they are practically performing magic when it comes to said thing. The only way for these students to escape is to kill another person and go through an investigation/trial conducted by the class without being discovered as the culprit, being executed if they are found out.
Now onto the last trial of DRV3, the last game. Just in case, these are again massive spoilers.
The mastermind is revealed to be Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate Cosplayer.Her talent allows her to basically become whatever character she cosplays. She can perfectly replicate their personality, voice and looks to the point of morphing her entire body. Again, these talents are sometimes magical.Her only rule about cosplaying is that she only cosplays fictional characters.During the final trial she reveals that this killing game was just a game show and that the students were ordinary people who volunteered to go in and get brainwashed into ultimate students. Everything they ever thought or believed in was fake and they are suffering for the entertainment of the world.Honestly I think that's a fantastic plot twist, but then something special happens.Tsumugi starts to cosplay characters from past games.She states that the past games were fictional. Never happened in-universe. The entire series was a fake put on by her and the same people "directing" this killing game, demanded by the audience (us).It's meant to be up to the player how much of what she says is the truth and how much is bullshit, but I think it's easy to see why this ending is super controversial.
