Petting still easily could have been done with a cursor or something. Not as elegant but it would work.
And I assume you can’t hand-feed them beans or puffs either, just watch a cutscene with curry. AND I’m not even gonna ask if they removed cleaning and drying them after battles like in refresh.
What a fucking shame. Two steps forward, 50 steps back. Toys and other pokemon reacting to each other would have been a nice addition to petting, not. replacement.
