Marnie probably needed to be a bigger part of the Player's adventure for her to really get a big impact. You and Lillie are attached at the hip for the last, like, 25-30% of the game, and that left a lasting impact on Players.
I personally think that Klara would've been a huge contender for popular girl. But she's a DLC character locked behind a single Version. And instead of giving her character development, they should've leaned into her being a skilled trainer, but outwardly pathetic.
