- using a certain earth move on a fire pokemon who had just used a special attack might boost target's defense but lower speed (lava flesh)

You'd end up with a lot more potential for mind games, field bonuses/hazards and double battles would be even crazier, but you might also quickly run out of unique combination mechanics. Reducing everything to 4 elemental types would definitely not justify a roster of 800+ pokemon, even with combo attacks everywhere. You'd probably need some extra gimmick in there somewhere just to promote more side-grade options.
