As for screenshotting a thread, I normally just use the archives. If it's really important to me and/or I want to make sure I have the full images instead of just the thumbnails to go with it, then I'd use a tool like HTTrack or wget, instead of just a screenshot.
If you just want memories, a screencap + the archives are more than sufficient in most cases and I wouldn't exactly call it weird considering their popularity. Happy archiving, anon!
