Earthbound takes a lot of inspiration from Dragon Quest, either borrowing its tropes (Mother 3 is an homage to Dragon Quest IV) or turning the tropes on their head (Lloyd is probably a nod to the Prince of Cannock, making the player think he's a pain to use until he pulls his weight later, also the Metal Monkey in Mother 3 gives no experience like DQ's Metal Slimes or Bubbles/Liquid Metals but the game insists it was a good experience fighting it)
The name is probably just incidental.
