I've seen this the most with the three most recent water starters. They're all definitely more popular with women than men, but even as a guy, I really like their designs, they're all great in their own way. I've definitely become a water starter guy as of late.
I think the reason they get hate is because they're starters that aren't traditionally "cool". Primarina is a pretty, feminine operetta, and Quaquaval is an energetic, fun-loving carnival dancer. I see them as cool, but it's easy to see why other people don't. The one I don't get is Inteleon, because a suave spy with firearms is about as cool as it gets. My guess is that people just don't like its proportions; it's twiggy and lanky with oversized hands, which can seem awkward on first impression, but I think it looks pretty cool once you see it in action. The big hands are obviously meant to draw attention to its literal finger guns.
