Is it because the chuuni executive didn't want to admit the games are more popular and interesting than his bland anime? Didn't want to admit the game protagonists are stronger and smarter than his OC mary sue? Dawn from the games would slap Ash around like a plush toy, Serena from the games would laugh at Ash's lack of style and power. Even Hau, Hop, Gladion, etc were nerfed to make space for Ash. What a bland and uninteresting anime, nobody wants to watch a weakling and especially don't want to watch fan favorite powerhouses get nerfed and defeated by that weakling. This would explain why the anime has always been so unpopular and boring. Maybe Horizons will do better and not nerf fan favorite game characters to let the OCs win. So far it's looking good, and that's why it's so popular and interesting.
