It is considered the peak of the Pokemon Anime, the perfected Pokemon formula that started with OS and the end of the classic era IF NOT the whole Anime. Ash/Paul and Dawn/Zoey rivalries are too good to express in words. You have to watch all 191 episodes to experience those plotlines to their fullest.

OS Ash is inexperienced, AG Ash is cocky and DP Ash is more of a seasoned fighter who can keep his feet on the floor. The reason people consider DP the true end of Ash is because is the last time you can see all his development bore fruit in an organic way. He beats his greatest rival yet in what's still to this day considered the best fight in the Anime lasting 3 episodes, he creates a true teacher/student relationship with the female protagonist and ends it all by kicking two legendaries' asses and finishing the League as the fourth-best for the first time. While SM has a good ending, it loses impact due to the version of Ash and the more than obvious low-level Pokemon League
