Abilities, detrimental or not, change the way that pokemon is played. Take Archeops for example, its easy to see how absolutely powerful it is, with amazing STABs and above average speed, its a major threat to any pokemon, that is until defeatist kicks in. Which is why a Archeops user needs to play carefully when using it, to keep it healthy. Not only for the user, but for the person up aagainst Archeops, he will want to try his hardets to get those sneaky pebbles up, or ruin it with priority before it does serious damage
