Simplicity and progression are key, especially since we are making a Pokemon game. We want to add our own spin on it but still keep it referenced to the source.
If every gym is a clusterfuck of objects, none will be memorable and all with be messy. If we start simple and progress to complex, it will feel as if we've actually progressed from that first, small gym into the big league. More powerful gym leaders should have more powerful and more complex gyms. Not the first gym that is part of a daycare and run by a friendly man who resembles Santa.
If we start off complex, every gym will be monotone since we can't build up.
Put all of that stuff in the side building.
Cheren's gym in BW2 is a good example of how I was thinking the gym should be set up, except with the daycare/orphanage on the side.

Also, the Aquilor sprite's looking excellent. I think the shading makes it look a bit too round, though?
