My first gen was the 3rd one. I saw the guides for the first one because my brother brought a magazine but we couldn't play them at the moment, just anime for us back then. One day I watched my brother playing Ruby on emulator and I asked him to let me play (all the while I asked over and over again which pokémon were those). He didn't want to but my father told him to teach me to play (a surprise because he hates videogames, really). And that's how it all started.
But my personal favorite is the 5th. I just liked how the improved the main story and character development in relation with previous games, and I actually liked the concept of "new region with totally new pokémon".
