You don't want to get into one unless you have to because usually only the winner gets to walk away. Outside civilization hubs you have roving bandit gangs and their ruthless Pokemon to contend with along with wild Pokemon toughened to the extreme simply from surviving the wilderness. It's a harsh, lawless world on the frontier. Death is common for the unprepared or those lacking ingenuity. But there's also plenty of treasure and adventure to be had for an aspiring thief and her Sneasel. Character building, knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses, becomes essential for both trainer and mon to survive in the world I'm building.
I'll post a link when I finish editing the first few chapters and put together a cover image. Unfortunately I don't have a specific recommendation for you except what's in the OP's catalog. My older fics tend to focus more on learning to use bonds for the purposes of fighting and has significantly more paranormal elements than my new project.
