Pokemania was declining at Crystal and pokemon was "uncool" by RS.
Those that were still fans were disappointed with not being able to trade up and other missing features like no day/night, no pokegear, no kanto/johto, no Red/Gold fight, no apricorn balls, etc.
PS2 really shined this era. Shame that the Resident Evil remakes weren't on it, they would have destroyed if they were and we certainly would have gotten a RE2 remake with tank controls (I'm still upset).
I recently replayed my Emerald cartridge and I've enjoyed it a whole bunch more recently than back then. It was very underrated for its time and I didn't understand the Battle Frontier back then.
