Its almost universally agreed here that those were the worst games in the franchise. BW at least had a slight difference where it was more story driven, and while the story wasn't great, it at least had twists and didn't make most other characters like gym leaders become stoic robots who only hung around in their gyms.
It was nice for once that it wasn't just "take on the villain just after the 7th gym, beat them, they disappear forever and you move onto the 8th gym like nothing", the end twist where they beat the champ and you battle the new champ, much like blue/green/whatever for kanto only its an enemy and not your rival, made it appear a lot more interesting than just your average champ. Alders battle and his theme did suck though, I wont deny that.
