Edgy became a thing on 4chan in reply to internet tough guy talk about how everyone is sheeple, how you want your coworker to die horribly, you like the taste of suffering in your bacon and how all women are whores. A lot of /pol/ and /r9k/ comments outside their containment boards basically.
Looking for a picture to show this to you I actually came across a reddit thread with a picture of some teenager talking about reading the satanic bible which was called edgy. One reply was "someone wasn't beaten enough when they were a child". Quite ironically that is edgy whereas the satanic bible as far as I know is not at all.
