If you want to see some sprites that use it, I think Mortasque, the Mushrooms and possibly Fantasmare have it. Though I imagine dithering showing textile-like/fluffy textures or wavering/ghost-like ones, not necessarily the moist surface of an aquatic being.
That said, the transition looks a bit sudden, try making the middle shade more dominant, using the lightest one sparingly to show the shine towards its front.
