It took till the end of the ds life to get those garbage animated sprites used in B/W. that shit could have been done on the gba possibly even the gbc if they put the effort in. It was just sprites bouncing and tweening constantly with no real animation. There were platformers and even a few fighters on gba that had more shit going at one time on screen than battles in B/W
As far as the 3d world they been using since gen 4, it just more laziness. Especially since gen 4 was full of gate houses separating the routes/cities. Scaling areas out to make the world seem bigger is basic shit that have been a part of jrpgs for the last 30 years, Yet here we are with a game released in 2016 full of empty towns, barely any enterable buildings, and a routes that teleports you almost a good quarter of the islands width to the next route(route12 to 13).
