>>47486737I said "technically" because in general a game that doesn't give any initial instructions and dumps you right into something is going to lead to a lot of confused players who can't figure out the basics, so no matter how much I or you love the way Colosseum handled it the reality is it could have been presented better. For example they could simply start the game by asking for not just a name but if you'd like to toggle on-screen hints that simply point stuff out as you go for the first few minutes of the game. However, pokemon is definitely simple enough that button mashing alone will get you 90% of the way there with no prior gaming experience at all so it's a very minor issue in this case. But pick up let's say Katamari and skip the tutorial entirely: it's got a fairly unique control scheme and physics that can be a pain to get used to when first starting out if you have no idea what you're getting into. Or Minecraft, back in the early days you learned how to play through the community resources not any of the in-game stuff, in fact most of the tutorial stuff was added in recent years and just this week I was helping a brand new player learn how to progress through the early game on a server I was hosting specifically for that purpose and was surprised at how hard it was for them to commit tool recipes to memory and they never would have gotten as far as they did without the recipe book. It's easy to forget from the perspective of having been playing games our whole lives but having a tutorial of some kind is extremely important. The problem is a lot of tutorials are bad and either don't teach the right info to get you started or treat the player like an idiot, finding balance is difficult but not impossible.
