In folklore, they are wicked monsters that trick and prey on Humans. They shapeshift and pretend to be "helpful" lure you deep in the forest, then tear you to shreds.
This isn't just the Unseelie folk either, the Pixie folk will go out of their way to fuck with children, lead them to bogs to drown then eat their squishy parts and fluids. The only slightly ONLY good Fae folk you'll find are the Nymphs who are mischiveous af just to mess with you. However; if a Nymph is having too much fun, it'll attract other Nymphs, and being surrounded by Nymphs is a comfy way to die. Seriously.
Imagine a Sylveon being your friend and playing pranks on you in a field, then suddenly you are surrounded by like 6 of them. They all give off a pleasing and friendly aura. Then they all fucking pounce and rip you flesh from bone.
This is how the Fae folk were like back in the day. Tricksters, shapeshifters, and wicked creatures that slipped under your radar because "Haha, I'm cute."
Hattarene, and Grimmsnarl are perfect example of true Fae.
