They're basically glorified TCG, except shallower and less creative, how would you make a Pokemon video game which actually involves them in the actual gameplay more?
Riding any Pokemon strong and large enough, flying on any Pokemon that can fly rather than just the ones who know the move, people getting intimidated if you have a strong Pokemon following you, having to take care of their needs, having alert Pokemon warn you of encounters, having small Pokemon fetch stuff for you from tight spaces, fire Pokemon making snow traversal easier, etc stuff like that.
