It’s so funny because back when the early OS originally aired, most kids loved Misty because she was cute and feisty (every boy was waifufagging over her), and we thought Ash was stupid for doing things like being gifted gym badges, not evolving most of his Pokémon, and letting Charizard disobey him. Pretty much the only thing people liked about Ash back then were his interactions with Misty, Brock, TR, and other characters that were always funny. Nobody really self-inserted as Ash or thought he was a great trainer, because he was actually a pretty bad trainer in the OS. Really the only gym badges that he actually earned by battling in the Indigo League were the Boulder, Thunder, Volcano, and maybe the Soul Badge if you don’t count TR interrupting the battle with Koga. All the other badges from Misty, Erika, and Sabrina were gifted to him because he solved some sort of problem, and he won the Earth Badge because Jessie and James were battling in place of Giovanni.
