The Pokemon anime's world had a very dense ecosystem, and enormous, verdant forests, rocky, mountain cliffs, or sprawling, populated grasslands were always on the outskirts of town, and not damaged or polluted or infringed upon at all by the Humans.
I think if there's one theme from the anime that we all agree on, it is Pokemon and Humans living in harmony together or peacefully apart, but I think there is another major theme: Having a great respect and reverence for nature in which is just as important.
"Nature" of course is a symbolic metaphor which represents the actual Pokemon themselves, and I can't help but feel like the unblemished beauty of nature in the Pokemon anime is an indictment on our current world where we hop from resource to resource and develop wherever and whatever the big corporation says it wants to.
If the Humans in the anime destroyed nature or took it for granted like we do, they would wipe out Pokemon, which would wipe out the main reason that those cities are so clean and healthy and safe and idyllic.
