>>46476639I legitimately am not entirely sure, my best guess for a recommendation would be to play whatever of the 3 best games appeal to you (Pt, HGSS, BW2 (first one is not necessary to play 2) and while you do that, watch the original run of the anime or start the manga and read it and play through the games. If you enjoy it, play another, maybe look at spinoffs in genres you already know you like, if you play all 3, try one game from every gen, look for the third versions or equivalent where possible, also if you really like BW2, BW1 is worth a look although it's not as mechanically sound. Once you've exhausted the main series of fun you like, you can start looking into the 2 gamecube games and romhacks for more competently designed encounters and difficulty.
Realistically though I doubt you'll catch the bug where you look at this series and see something special and feel all the potential it has under the hood waiting to not be squandered on literal kusoge by gamefreak. You'll probably enjoy them all right, note the sheer freedom of team building as a major positive, but not be able to get over the absolute lack of encounter design compared to any digimon or SMT game.
