The number of viable mons kept growing as more mons were introduced from 1-6, leading to around 50 mons in a sizable meta, where it stayed roughly the same even with gen 7 and Z moves.
But then comes along gen 8 and the size of the meta just shrinks dramatically. Stuff like Corviknight, Rillaboom, and Dragupult were just so centralizing that most mons, even ones that were previously quite good, could not stay on the same level. That's where I see power creep actually taking hold. And gen 9 continues to have a much smaller and restricted metagame, alongside an almost unheard of amount of bans - I don't think the trend is going to ever go back at this point.
