That's why they move the bar up so slowly or why they always move one step forwards and two backwards. They could've given us Gen 8 with 1080p but I'd be willing to bet my left nut they gave us 720p just so they can artificially manufacture progress when they make Gen 9 in 1080p.
They know they can use the same engine for half a decade, insert around 100 new cartoon monsters with different moves, coat it with new areas and music and it'll sell well above 10 million copies guaranteed. Rinse and repeat every 1-2 years for maximum profit.
Trying is just not worth for them.
