Instead of picking your Starter off the table or out of a briefcase, what if it's a Safari Zone like mini-game? The professor sends you to the back yard with a ball that looks like a Safari Ball, but it's got the same catch rate as a Master Ball so you don't Bad End if it breaks out. In the back yard, there's a stream where the Water starter appears, a barbecue pit where the Fire starter appears, that Bike-proof tall grass where you find the Grass starter, and all three of these appear interchangeably in the middle for those who like it random. There'd even be an Electric starter that appears in four grassy squares next to the breaker box for Pokemon Yellow fans.
