It allowed her to be more active, a repetition of the girl taking her time to decide what to do would have been boring imo. And it's not like Dawn was steamrolling everyone, actually the contrary, while she had good combinations it was shown that she had a lot of room to improve, the writers balanced that very well.
Other battle skills she has are her tag battle chemistry with Ash and techniques she devolped like proto counter shield, flame ice, dodge with spin, Ice Chandelier and more unnamed combinations.
