The new "fossil Pokemon" abominations are probably inspired by the history of paleontology.
I was a big dinosaur fag when I was a kid, so some fun facts:
The Lindwurm in Austria was the first statue built to reconstruct an animal from its fossils. The statue is of a great dragon but the fossils actually came from an extinct rhinoceros relative.
Megalosaurus was originally portrayed on all fours like a large monitor lizard.
Iguanadon's thumb spikes were originally put on its nose as a sort of horn.
Diplodocus' head was originally mounted on its tail.
Oviraptor was discovered on top of a clutch of eggs, so paleontologists at the time erroneously named it egg-thief. It was later discovered they were its own eggs that it was protecting.
