He might lean towards being a helicopter parent to overcompensate for his parents never being there. I could see him nagging his kids and making sure that they're eating well and dress warmly and they'd scoff and roll their eyes but know that he's doing it out of love.
Even if he hovers and annoys them in that way, they would never doubt that he loves them and he'd always be there for them for anything that they'd need. He'd pack big lunches for them and make sure to spend time with them and plan trips and fun things for them to do outside. And even if he focuses on eating well, he would not be immune to giving in and getting them ice cream or making sweets for them every once in a while. He would adore his kids.
