I don't mind a few little changes like the position of their eyes, or their colors being something totally different, or how their hands or hair works. I also don't mind if they choose to wear clothes and accessories. Character/Personality wise, I love the ones that are more explicitly 'human' kind of like your Mystery Dungeon types or TR's Meowth. That means they can talk/and are telepathic, they have a lot of agency and independence, they have goals and desires to not only survive but thrive. This doesn't mean they don't sometimes choose to have trainers, tutors, or human friends, it just means they have a lot more independence to choose what they want to do in life.
