The league is an integral part of the S/S story, but it's also set up more as a sport with all sorts of things that come with that. If they treat the next anime as a kind of solo sports anime there's a lot of good shit they could get in there.
Like, if SM was a slice of life school series, S/S could be a single player sport series. Full of rivals, some manager/trainer pushing Ash further, dealing with the public end of stardom, etc.
